How Much Does A Home Battery Cost
Home battery prices vary a lot by region, equipment, and how complicated the install is. The clearest way to read a price is per kilowatt hour (kWh) of capacity, then check what the quote includes.
What The Published Ranges Say
EnergySage publishes average storage prices by location. As of October 2026, its EnergySage Texas storage cost page lists an average of $1,000 per kWh in Texas before incentives. Other local pages show a wide spread: the EnergySage Idaho storage cost page shows roughly $1,222 per kWh, and the EnergySage Kentucky storage cost page shows roughly $1,350 per kWh. These are marketplace averages and not prices anyone is obliged to offer you.
What That Means By Size
Multiplying the published per kWh range gives a rough sense of scale. This is our arithmetic, not a quote, and it assumes a $1,000 to $1,350 per kWh spread based on the three pages above.
| Battery Capacity | Rough Installed Range |
|---|---|
| 5 kWh | About $5,000 to $6,750 |
| 10 kWh | About $10,000 to $13,500 |
| 13 to 15 kWh | About $13,000 to $20,250 |
| 20 kWh | About $20,000 to $27,000 |
EnergySage's Texas page lists $10,000 for 10 kWh, $13,000 for 13 kWh, and $20,000 for 20 kWh. Its Idaho page lists $12,222, $15,889, and $24,444 for the same sizes, and its Kentucky page lists $13,500, $17,550, and $27,000. These are averages before incentives, and your quote can land outside them.
What Changes The Price
- Equipment: brand, chemistry, and whether the inverter is built in.
- Backup scope: backing up a few circuits needs less wiring than backing up a whole house.
- Electrical work: a panel upgrade or a new subpanel adds cost.
- Permits and utility fees: these differ by city and utility.
- Solar pairing: adding a battery during a solar install may cost less in labor than a later retrofit, so ask installers to price both.
What To Check On Every Quote
- Is the price before or after incentives? Federal tax credit rules have changed recently, so confirm with a tax professional what applies to you.
- Does it include permits, interconnection, and any panel work?
- Is it quoted for usable capacity? See Warranty And Degradation for why that matters.
- What is the total over time if it is a loan or a lease?
Cost Versus Value
A lower price is not always a better deal, and a higher one is not always a better product. Compare the cost per kWh of usable capacity, the continuous power rating, the warranty, and the scope of backed up circuits. Two systems with the same price tag can differ on every one of those. Also remember that a battery that runs only a few circuits during an outage costs less than one meant to carry a whole house, and either choice can be reasonable if it matches how you live.
Financing Notes
Loans and leases spread the cost over time but add interest or fees. Ask for the total you will pay over the full term, in writing, and whether a lease transfers if you sell the house. Do not accept a payment figure without the total.
